About Right Heart Catheterization

What to Expect During Right Heart Catheterization

Right heart catheterization is done in a hospital, but you remain awake during the procedure. The doctor will first give you medicine to help you relax, then numb the area on the arm, groin (upper thigh) or neck where the catheter will enter your blood vessel. A needle is then used to make a small hole in the blood vessel, through which a tapered tube is placed into this blood vessel. Then a thin, flexible guide wire is inserted through the tube, into your blood vessel and on to your heart. Your doctor will then use the wire to guide the catheter into place, and testing will begin. After all tests are complete, the catheter and guide wire will be removed.8

Preparing for Right Heart Catheterization

Find out from your doctor what you need to do to prepare for your right heart catheterization and if you should stop taking any medicines before the procedure. Remind your doctor if you have any other conditions, such as diabetes or kidney disease, to minimize the risk of complications. Finally, arrange for a ride home because you may feel groggy.8
